In etymologically,
Mappalili (Bughines) or Appalili (Makassaris) is derived from the word
Palili containing the same meaning that is keep the things that would disturb
or damage the rice crop. Generally, meaning is intended to stretch the land to
be planted, disalipuri (Bugis) or dilebbu (Makassar), means protected from
interference that could reduce production and close to the things that can
increase productivity by organizing ceremonies picuri-picuri baje (Makassar )
and sennung-sennung madeceng (Bugis).
As we know that Mappalili/Appalili have a rule or
procedure which is different from the activities / other ceremonies, it is
reflected from the background holding of ceremonies Mappalili / Appalili. And
different to with the other distric or regency. While in Pangkep regency too have a different
ceremonies Mappalili between distric or subdistric with the other distric in
one regency.
What is Mappalili
Mappalili
or Appalili as a type of Indonesian culture is a tradition which has been made
as far back as by Pangkep society. It’s a culture product from ancestors in
Pangkep regency.
Mappalili is etymologically palili, it means get away
things that would disrupt or destroy rice plants. Mappalili or appalili such as
Bugis-Makassar ethnic is generally mentioned, is a local knowledge ritual or
manifestation (local wisdom) are hereditary implemented in South Sulawesi in
getting started down to the field.
Mappalili is a cue or a command to start down to the rice
field. The purpose is in order of land to be planted, disalipuri
(Buginess) or to be protected from the annoyance that can reduce the
productivity and to be closed to the things that can increase productivity.
Therefore,
Mappalili or Appalili must keep up as national culture asset.
Mappalili in
Segeri
BONTOMATENE, Mapalili ritual would be conducted by Puang
Matao Saidi, the Bissu leader in Segeri district, especially in Bontomatene
village, marked the beginning of the planting season. According to Puang Upe, customary
ceremonies conducted hereditary believed the local community as a guide for
farmers to begin rice planting season. Puang Upe is a new leader of indigenous
peoples in the house Arajang Segeri, Pangkep District. Befored him, the leader
is Puang matoa Saidi.
Until now people in Segeri still do the ceremony before
planting rice, pound rice, and thanksgiving ceremony at the rice harvest.
Unique and interesting because of the tradition of an agrarian society here as
the main perpetrators of ritual must be performed / led by a Puang Matowa, assisted
by a representative who holds Puang Lolo, and both were appointed by the king
or ruler. Puang Matowa bissu is the leader of the community, which actually is:
Ø Guard the king and
the royal guards in the days of royal heritage in South Sulawesi;
Ø People who take
care of the household system of the king;
Ø People who like
women but invulnerable to sharp weapons;
Ø People who are
believed to cure the sick are referred to as physician
Ø Including calabai
community (communities that have a split personality), transvestities;
Ø Plays an important
role in the kingdom that is as an intermediary world above and below the so called
Gods bissu.
Tradition, which is run by the government of former Bugis
kingdom implies malebbi and malemppu, which means glory and honesty. Therefore,
the entire grammar rules adhered to by sincere and earnest. Moral of the main
target rules, so what the objectives and targets will be achieved with good
ceremony. When the rules of morality are replaced orally charged with the
written rules are more modern, then the rules are in traditional oral society
began to lose its power.
The presence in the village bissu Bontomatene, District
Segeri, District Pangkep estimated to have existed since the 1825's. When was
there a son named Bonne Kingdom Pajunglolo Map Tolawe who fled to Segeri, but
unknown reason the cause escape. Royal Bone heirloom mysteriously, called
Arajang follow the runaway son of the king. This form of inheritance arajang
plow, so since then started there Mapalili ceremony. This ceremony is to begin
planting rice in the hope of someday getting a satisfactory harvest. Mapalili
ceremony is a long series of ceremonies, which include:
Ø Mateddu Arajang

The Purpose from
Mappalili
Mappalili has goals that benefit the farmers as it works
to overcome pest attack and the seeds of a new disease. That’s because the vacant
land next to the field that was planted is no longer be a ground for the
rice-destroyer insects. Because the land is at once tilled by the farmer. So
the chance of pests, weeds and other insects such as stinky rice pest,
planthopper (rice stem borer) is no longer breed.
Conclusion
We can conclude that . in Pangkep regency there are so
many cultures and customs are often carried down through the generations and
one of them is stubborn namely Mappalili (Bughines) or Appalili (Makassar).
Mappalili / Appalili have a unifying symbol that is recognized and has a high
value of the function and purpose of that. And The implementation process of
the ceremony Mappalili / Appalili consist of
Determine Mappalili day (starting down fields), Determine the scattering time, Determine the
time of planting, and agree varieties to be planted. And in Mappalili or
Appalili many person involved like Karaeng Siallo, Pinati, Karaeng Labakkang,
and so on.
So
as teenagers we must boned up on our culture from legitimately portion of our
predecessor. We can help maintain from influence foreign cultural. Pangkep
culture is important asset for us.
